An Intermonadological Interpretation of a Selk’nam Community Ritual: The Ochen Maten

This article offers a phenomenological interpretation of ochen maten, the Selk’nam shamanic ritual through which the xo’on magically draws a whale ashore, from the perspective of Edmund Husserl’s monadology. It argues that monadology can be understood not only as a theory of intersubjectivity but also as a phenomenology of community grounded in empathy (Einfühlung), nature, the living body (Leib), the instinctual community (Triebsgemeinschaft), and the teleology of caring for life (Lebenssorge). Methodologically, the article adopts a relation of reciprocal elucidation between phenomenology and ethnography: monadology serves to explicate structures of meaning disclosed in the phenomenon, while ethnographic description helps refine the philosophical scope of phenomenological categories without reducing the historical and cultural irreducibility of Selk’nam experience. From this perspective, ochen maten is interpreted not merely as an ethnographic illustration but as a privileged phenomenon for explicating an intermonadological communal structure that articulates the shaman, the community, the whale, and the territory within a shared worldly horizon. Finally, the Selk’nam genocide is examined as a transgression of the limit (Grenzverletzung) that destroys this communal structure and, by contrast, reveals the ethical significance of the care for life.
