THE STIGMA OF PEOPLE WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AND IMPLICATIONS FOR THEIR REHABILITATION PROCESS:
A STUDY OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
Keywords:
rehabilitation, treatment, stigma, SchizophreniaAbstract
Factors that create and perpetuate the stigma of people with schizophrenia are analyzed, and at the same time, the implications associated to treatment process and rehabilitation of patients is identified. The study is based on a qualitative-descriptive design, with intentional sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 mental health professionals with at least 7 years of experience in working with patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Analysis of the collected data is performed through thematic content analysis. The results indicate that stereotypes and prejudice are based on the historical record of madness and, in turn, are promoted by the media based on lack of information and education on the disease. Stigma appears as a phenomenon hindering early detection and treatment adherence; making patients more prone to experience relapses, intensifying their psychotic symptoms; generating loss identity, self-esteem and autonomy construction, which significantly interferes with the process of occupational therapy and social reintegration of the subject. It is concluded that stigma of people with schizophrenia is a current and longstanding problem that negatively affects patients’ treatment and rehabilitation process, affected not only those who suffer the disorder but also to their families, due to fear of social exclusion. Stigma is a phenomenon that must be problematized on the general population level, as well as by professionals involved in the treatment of this disease.
