HERMENEUTICS AND LITERATURE:
JORGE LUIS BORGES’S READING OF LA MUERTE Y LA BRÚJULA AS AN IMPOSITIVE ACT

This essay’s proposition is that hermeneutics and literature are bound by the act of reading, and this reading, associated with revelation, can be conceived as an act of interpretive violence. The connection between both spaces is given by theorists such as Hans-Georg Gadamer (according to Franco, 2004 and Garrido, 2004), and Reception Theory, while the aspects that cuestion such interpretation are delivered, indirectly, by Michel Foucaults’s Hermeneutics of the Subjetc (1994). Such theoretical framework is put to use in Jorge Luis Borges’s Death and the Compass (1942), a fictional space that resurrects these questions: which reading is the triumphant one?, how violent can we consider an interpretation that dismisses others?, and to what do we owe this selection?
