Abstract

In this paper, I develop a philosophical analysis of the concept of mourning deepening in some of the ontological and ethical implications of it. I hold, using some of the resources of Ricoeur’s thought, that the concept of mourning is a phenomenological evidence of an ontology of the capable man, of the “wounded cogito” and of otherness. With respect with the ethical implications of mourning, I affirm, using some of Ricoeur’s and Foucault’s resources, that the idea of mourning can be seen from the point of view of an ethics of originary affirmation and as a technology of the self at the service of the care of the self. These considerations will be reinforced with some reflections on Derrida ́s account on mourning, which will help us to situate mourning as a fundamental disposition of existence and not only as a therapeutic process.
