SENSE OF AGENCY AND ITS DISRUPTIONS IN DEPRESSION
AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH
Keywords:
Sense of Agency, Depression, Nosology, Embodiment, PhenomenologyAbstract
The following article aims to analyze the altered sense of agency that can be shown in major depressive disorder or clinical depression through the study of patient testimonies. We will pursue the following scheme. After the introductory section, in the first section we will describe the nosological approach to depression represented by diagnostic manuals such as DSM. We will hold that this approach is insufficient because (i) it reduces psychopathology to symptomatology, (ii) the chosen symptoms are heterogeneous, provoking a confusing integration in the total picture of the disorder, and (iii) it minimizes the subjectivity. Considering those limitations, we will characterize the methods of phenomenological psychiatry applied to mental disorders as an alternative to the exclusively nosological approach. In the second section, we will describe disturbances of embodiment and, in particular, disturbances in the sense of agency. In the third section, we will identify at least four traits related to a disruption in the sense of agency, namely: (i) loss of control, (ii) pathological passivity, (iii) chrematization and (iv) inhibition. Finally, we will show how this article contributes to the development of an interdisciplinary program for mental disorders.
